The 2025 Summer Explorers Club will run from 6/23/25 - 8/15/25, with Friday, July 4 closed for the holiday. SEC Managers must be available for training and set-up one week before the start of the program.
SEC Manager will work 40 hrs/week as scheduled. The Summer Explorers Club is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., M-F.
JOB DESCRIPTION - Summer Explorers Club (SEC) Program Manager
Status - Sub/Temp

(Meets state licensing requirements for Director unless this responsibility has been assigned to another staff member)
General Summary:
The Summer Explorers Club Manager is directly responsible to the District Child Care Coordinator for duties about the operation and safety of the Summer Explorers Club Day Camp. Campers will range in age from 3-years old to 12-years old.
Terms of Assignment:
- The Manager must be available for training the week before camp begins, including weekends.
- The Manager must be available to work starting the Monday before camp begins. They will be required to work additional hours before and after the camp program. Additional hours will be required before camp for planning and staff training, as well as hours after camp for evaluations and clean-up.
- The program runs from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensures State of Michigan mandated guidelines for Childcare Licensing are met, including child to staff ratios, administration of student medication, maintenance of student records, etc.
- Implements and enforces safety standards and guidelines established for the camp following the Department of Human Services (DHS) Child Care Licensing and Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS).
- Trains and supervises program assistants to include regular performance feedback to a staff member and District Childcare Coordinator.
- Handles all disciplinary and staff problems/concerns as outlined by TCAPS and the State of Michigan.
- Responds to disciplinary needs of campers throughout the summer and promptly brings concerns to the District Childcare Coordinator.
- Develops and implements weekly themes/activities to include periodic field trips, developing activities such as art, games, and songs, and initiating spontaneous activities in the event of inclement weather.
- Prepares activities for the week and assigns them to counselors, and/or assists camp assistants with planning activities as needed.
- Provides input to the District Childcare Coordinator regarding general observations and suggestions about camp activities.
- Responsible for monitoring and collecting weekly payments from parents/guardians, referring delinquent accounts to the Childcare Billing Coordinator.
- Maintains and monitors budget.
- Collects, inputs and submits DHS information to the TCAPS Billing Department.
- Responsible for accurate daily and weekly attendance.
- Orders/secures supplies as needed.
- Administers First Aid and completes necessary district and DHS incident report forms.
- Supervises cleanup of the facility and playgrounds during operational hours and after.
- Maintains positive public relations for the camp and sets a positive example for the rest of the staff.
- Sets agendas and organizes committee meetings throughout the year.
- Performs other tasks as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Must meet educational qualifications as required by the DHS Bureau of Children and Adult Licensing, R 400.8113(a) for Program Directors.
- Have high initiative and ability to positively interact with parents, children and other staff.
- Motivated to provide a safe and stimulating environment for children.
- Be willing to work out-of-doors in all types of summer weather.
- Be able to comprehend, process, and apply information, instruction, and give direction.
- Have current adult, infant/child CPR, and First Aid certification or obtain certification by the first day of Camp.
- Provide a Tuberculosis Test Report showing evidence that staff member is free from communicable tuberculosis and is verified within 1 year before employment.
