General Summary:

The Crossing Guard assists school students crossing busy intersections and streets; instructs students in basic safety procedures related to crossing streets.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Provides crossing guard services at assigned locations; assists elementary school students crossing busy streets and intersections.
  2. Ensures students cross street(s) only when safe; stop vehicles by using hand held stop signs; supervise students while waiting for traffic to clear.
  3. Ensures that students are aware of proper safety rules when crossing streets; instruct students in basic safety techniques when crossing streets.
  4. Remains visible to the public during working hours; remain calm in emergency situations. Be available to report emergencies consistent with district protocol, including reporting incidents to the building principal or calling 9-1-1. 
  5. Observes and reports any incidents or conditions that present a potential safety hazard to the students or the guard.
  6. Other duties as assigned. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  1. Minimum education requirement is a high school diploma or GED.
  2. CPR/First Aid certification preferred or willingness to obtain certification. 
  3. Interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively and courteously with students and school personnel.
  4. Ability to care for, supervise, and nurture students.
  5. Ability to resolve conflict.
  6. Ability to maintain confidentiality related to sensitive information pertaining to students and school personnel.
  7. Willingness to participate in district training as required, including completion of suggested online training modules.
  8. Willingness and being able to work outside in all types of weather conditions.
  9. Reliable and dependable.  

 

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  1. Must be able to report on a regular and consistent basis. 
  2. Maintain consistent and punctual attendance.
  3. Duties include frequent walking and physical activity, as well as use of hands and arms for signaling and light lifting/carrying. 
  4. The ability to listen and effectively orally communicate information and ideas to a diverse population.
  5. Ability to effectively discern information and formulate appropriate action(s).
  6. Ability to critically think and provide appropriate solutions. 
  7. Ability to work effectively and efficiently.

Environmental Conditions:

Incumbents work in outdoor environments with moderate to loud noise levels. Duties may be completed in cold and hot temperatures or inclement weather conditions, including work on slippery and/or uneven surfaces. Work environment includes operating around moving vehicles. 

 

Work Schedules:

Must be available to report during the school year consistent with the district’s school year calendar.

The individual selected for this position will be required to pass a criminal history background check.
