General Summary:
The Licensed Plumber is responsible for all plumbing work for all buildings within the school system and reports to the Director for Facilities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs all plumbing work in compliance with Code of the State of Michigan. Assists with heating, air conditioning, and mechanical work as needed.
- Installs, maintains and repairs all plumbing equipment and controls including process piping responsibilities.
- Installs, maintains and repairs all hot water systems and appurtenances.
- Determines material needs and estimates project costs from blueprints, sketches and existing conditions.
- Designs appropriate plumbing for maintenance requirements and new installations.
- Reads and interprets blueprints and schematic drawings.
- Orders required materials in an efficient, economical manner.
- Works effectively from manufacturer’s specifications and manuals
- Works from ladders and scaffolding as required.
- Works in tunnels as required.
- Completes and maintains required records and reports.
- Installs and repairs backflow regulators as requested.
- Performs annual backflow prevention testing.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Minimum of a State of Michigan plumber’s license required. State of Michigan Master Plumber’s license, Plumbing Contractor’s license and State of Michigan Mechanical license including unlimited heating, gas piping, ductwork and limited cooling/air conditioning, and refrigerant recovery endorsements preferred. Holds (or is willing to obtain within one year of employment) proper backflow prevention testing certification. Five years commercial experience preferred.
- High school graduate and valid State of Michigan driver’s license required.
- Possess good habits, character and attendance record.
- Be neat in appearance.
- Be able to communicate effectively at a level of proficiency that permits quality job performance.
- Possess knowledge in the safe use of tools and equipment.
- Possess good mechanical abilities.
- Capable of working from ladders and scaffolds and working in confined areas such as tunnels, with proper training.
- Be capable and demonstrate the establishment and maintenance of harmonious, effective relationships with students, staff, supervisors and co-workers.
- Upon request, present a certificate of good health signed by a licensed physician appointed by the school board verifying the ability to perform the job.
- Possess a willingness to learn new job skills and techniques.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Must be able to report on a regular and consistent basis to the assigned facility or worksite.
- Maintain consistent and punctual attendance.
- Duties include frequent walking and physical activity.
- The ability to move about the facility or building, including bending, pushing/pulling, lifting, twisting, climbing, stooping, or crouching to complete work-related tasks.
- Must possess skills to safely operate a variety of tools and equipment.
- Basic technology skills required to utilize computer and/or other office equipment (printer/copy machine, etc.) consistent with work-related tasks.
- The ability to listen and effectively communicate information and ideas to a diverse population.
- The ability to effectively discern information and formulate appropriate action(s).
- The ability to critically think and provide appropriate solutions.
- The ability to work independently and maintain effective time management.
- The ability to work effectively and efficiently in high stress or conflict situations.
- Occasionally moves boxes, equipment, and other supplies weighing up to 50 lbs across the building for various needs.
Environmental Conditions:
Incumbents work in both indoor and outdoor environments with moderate to loud noise levels. Work may be completed in controlled temperature conditions; however, duties may be completed in cold and hot temperatures or inclement weather conditions. Duties may include exposure to chemicals and mechanical and electrical hazards.
Work Schedules:
Must be available for on-call work, overtime and/or emergency overtime before and/or after regular scheduled workday, when necessary.
