General Summary:


The School Safety Liaison assists in providing a well-organized safe and secure program for the Traverse City Area Public Schools. This position reports to the building administrator for daily operations and evaluation purposes but takes direction on job responsibilities, processes, and professional development from the Director of Safety and Security. 


Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assists in the overall security of the facility and its staff and students, providing information to school administrators and law enforcement personnel, as required.
  2. Identifies, retrieves and escorts students as needed per school administration and/or law enforcement.
  3. Where possible, assists staff and students during a crisis or event such as lockdowns, fires, etc. 
  4. Provides parking information to students on school grounds, including oversight of secure entry and exit strategies, vehicle and bus traffic flow, and parking enforcement. 
  5. Promotes safe and secure operations within the building by monitoring hallways, bathrooms, locker rooms, common areas, cafeteria, etc.
  6. Maintains a safe and secure environment by monitoring the facility and grounds. The focus is to be visible while observing potential risks to the school. 
  7. Ensures physically secure integrity of exterior and interior doors, windows and hallways. 
  8. Assists in developing and executing the Emergency Operations Plan.
  9. Regularly monitors, reviews, and investigates security camera footage. Works with school administration and local law enforcement to provide confidential information and recordings as they pertain to the TCAPS Code of Conduct and/or criminal evidentiary purposes.
  10. Efficiently uses provided radio equipment to maintain open communication during both daily operations as well as emergency situations.
  11. Recognizes acute emergency medical conditions and performs basic first aid intervention as needed, including Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and the use of the Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and Stop-the-Bleed kits.      
  12. Performs other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  1. A high school diploma or GED required. 
  2. Interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively and courteously with students, school personnel, and law enforcement.
  3. Ability to resolve conflict through effective de-escalation and communication skills.
  4. Previous experience working with the public.
  5. Desire to promote safety and security.
  6. Ability to care for, supervise, and protect staff and students.
  7. Ability to follow directions.
  8. Ability to work independently while following rules and regulations set forth by the district.
  9. Responsible for reporting relevant information to the building administrator.
  10. Excellent organizational skills.
  11. Dependable, reliable, and protective of sensitive/confidential information.
  12. Experience with basic technology and a willingness to learn school specific software applications related to safety and security.
  13. Basic first aid, CPR and AED training and experience recommended. 

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  1. Must be able to report on a regular and consistent basis. 
  2. Maintain consistent and punctual attendance.
  3. Duties include sitting, standing, frequent walking and other physical activity, as well as use of hands and arms for reaching, signaling and light lifting/carrying. 
  4. The ability to listen and effectively orally communicate information and ideas to a diverse population.
  5. Ability to effectively discern information and formulate appropriate action(s).
  6. Ability to critically think and provide appropriate solutions. 
  7. Ability to work effectively and efficiently.

Environmental Conditions:

Incumbents work in both indoor and outdoor environments with moderate to loud noise levels. Duties may be completed in cold and hot temperatures or inclement weather conditions, including work on slippery and/or uneven surfaces. Work environment includes operating around moving vehicles. 

 

Work Schedules:

Must be available to report during the school day at building assignment and throughout the school year consistent with the district’s school year calendar.
