AFSCME Benefits Summary
General Summary:
The Boiler Mechanic provides boiler related maintenance services for the district and reports to the Assistant Director for Facility Maintenance and/or the Director of Buildings and Grounds.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Efficiently and thoroughly troubleshoots heating and temperature control equipment within the district.
- Reads and interprets blueprints in order to remove, lay out, and install temperature control systems.
- Troubleshoots and repairs gas fired burners and their controls and tunes them to maximum efficiency.
- Installs and repairs steam and hot water heating controls such as valves traps, pumps, and thermostats.
- Determines material needs and estimates project costs from blueprints, sketches and existing conditions.
- Independently organizes and lays out own work.
- Tests and replaces all safety devices on boilers to insure proper function.
- Performs water treatment tests and advises custodian of adjustments needed to insure boiler water is properly treated.
- Completes and maintains required records and reports.
- Performs all assigned duties in a manner in which contributes to the safety and well being of the staff and buildings.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- High school diploma or GED required, college or trade school classes preferred.
- Current State of Michigan Mechanical License with unlimited heating endorsement required.
- Have a minimum of 3 years experience working on gas fired boilers 30 HP and larger including fireside, waterside, and combustion set-up.
- Have a minimum of 2 years experience in temperature control work, both electric and pneumatic.
- Have a valid State of Michigan driver’s license.
- Capable of working from ladders, scaffolds and aerial platforms and working in confined areas such as tunnels, with proper training.
- Be capable of reading and interpreting blueprints and sketches.
- Possess good habits, character and attendance record.
- Be neat in appearance.
- Be able to speak, read and write at a level of proficiency that permits satisfactory job performance.
- Possess knowledge in use of tools and equipment.
- Possess good mechanical abilities.
- Be capable and demonstrate the establishment and maintenance of harmonious, effective relationships with students, staff, supervisors and co-workers.
- Upon request, present a certificate of good health signed by a licensed physician appointed by the school board verifying the physical ability to perform the job.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
- Possess a willingness to learn new job skills and techniques.
