This temporary substitute assignment is at West Senior High School (beginning approximately May 12, 2025 through June 18, 2025)

  

Grade Levels: 9-12

Reports to: Building Principal and Associate Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction

 

General Summary:

The High School Assistant Principal assists the Principal in providing instructional leadership to staff including: curriculum planning, review and implementation, and professional development to improve student progress.  Assists the Principal in ensuring the safety and welfare of students and staff.  The High School Assistant Principal reports to the High School Lead Principal.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Interacts with students to encourage each individual to perform at his/her highest level.
  2. Provides a safe and healthy environment for students and staff.
  3. Manages all building staff personnel.
  4. Assists the Principal in assigning students to classes and teachers to classrooms.  
  5. Assists with class scheduling.
  6. Provides support to teachers and resolves staff problems.
  7. Provides general supervision to students.  Assists the Principal in the Supervision at extra curricular activities.
  8. Evaluates performance of assigned staff.
  9. Maintains relations with parents, parent groups, school volunteers and outside agencies.
  10. Monitors Special Education.
  11. Enforces rules and guidelines in the Student Handbook.
  12. Provides assistance with curriculum development and School Improvement goals.
  13. Implements policy and procedure changes from the Board, or the State and Federal level.
  14. Builds a positive learning environment.
  15. Serves on district and building level committees.
  16. Other duties as required.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current standards for Michigan secondary administrator certification.
  • Current Michigan secondary teaching certification.
  • Master’s degree minimum.
  • Minimum of three (3) years successful secondary teaching/administrative experience.
  • Strong background in curriculum.
  • Demonstrated educational leadership.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work effectively with administrative colleagues, staff, students, and parents (listening, speaking and writing skills).

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with the development and implementation of interdisciplinary curriculum and team teaching.
  • Working knowledge of Effective School Research/School Improvement.
  • Knowledge and application of multiple intelligences, brain research and human development theories.
  • Experience with personnel supervision that focuses on growth of personnel and students.
  • Additional graduate classes/degree beyond a Master’s degree.
  • Working knowledge of the use of technology in the classroom and student and professional management systems.
  • Working knowledge of assessment.

 

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  1. Must be able to report on a regular and consistent basis to the office. 
  2. Maintain consistent and punctual attendance.
  3. The person in this position needs to be able to move about the building and district property setting, including stooping, crouching, bending, sitting, standing, and walking. 
  4. Regular use of computer and other office equipment (printer/copy machine, etc.)
  5. The ability to listen and effectively communicate, both written and orally, information and ideas to a diverse population.
  6. Ability to effectively discern information and formulate appropriate action(s).
  7. Ability to critically think and provide appropriate solutions. 
  8. Ability to work effectively and efficiently in high stress or conflict situations. 
  9. Occasionally moves boxes and office supplies weighing up to 20 lbs across the office for various needs. 
  10. Ability to drive to various locations throughout the district.

Environmental Conditions:

This is a largely active assignment, including walking and maneuvering around the school building and school property. Noise levels vary from quiet to loud, and environmental conditions include indoor and outdoor duties in temperature controlled and non-temperature controlled environments. Duties performed also include work on a computer or phone in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

 

Work Schedules:

Must be available for overtime and/or emergency overtime before and/or after regular scheduled workday, when necessary.

 

Background Checks:

The individual selected for this position will be required to pass a criminal history background check.
