General Summary:

The teacher instructional assistant reports to the principal and works closely with students to support the growth of reading and mathematical skills.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Works with the intervention team and classroom teachers to identify students in need of reading and/or math support using the NWEA and Aimsweb assessment tools.
  2. Creates and maintains a consistent schedule in keeping with the classroom teachers' daily schedule.
  3. Works with individual students or small groups to support reading/math growth through targeted, direct instruction based on student needs. Determines on their own, how quickly to move students through curriculum materials, and whether additional materials are needed to meet a particular student's needs.
  4. Administers grade and district level required benchmark assessments three times per year, and monitors progress of students based on schedule set by the intervention team.
  5. Administers state assessment (such as M-STEP) in small group settings as determined by IEP or Section 504 plans.
  6. Provides consistent communication of student progress with classroom teachers through benchmark and progress monitoring data. 
  7. Prepares and participates in Tier 2 data meetings throughout the school year to share student performance, identify students ready-to-exit intervention, and discuss teacher concerns about students who should be considered for intervention.
  8. Attend meetings for student concerns (IEP, TASC, etc.) and parent conferences when requested.
  9. Alerts the classroom teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.
  10. Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students and parents.
  11. Participates in inservice training programs as required.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  1. Minimum education requirement is an Associate’s degree or 60 credit hours of post-secondary institution education credits.
  2. Interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively and courteously with students and school personnel.
  3. Previous experience working with children.
  4. Ability to care for, supervise, and nurture children.
  5. Ability to follow directions.
  6. Ability to work independently.
  7. Ability to assist with maintaining records of student progress.
  8. Excellent organizational skills.
  9. Ability to resolve conflict.
  10. Dependable, reliable, and protective of sensitive/confidential information.  

 

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  1. Must be able to report on a regular and consistent basis. 
  2. Maintain consistent and punctual attendance.
  3. Duties include frequent walking and physical activity, as well as use of hands and arms for signaling and light lifting/carrying. Must have the ability to move about the classroom/building and school property, including bending, pushing/pulling, lifting, twisting, climbing, stooping, or crouching to complete work-related tasks with and without students. 
  4. The ability to listen and effectively orally communicate information and ideas to a diverse population.
  5. Ability to effectively discern information and formulate appropriate action(s).
  6. Ability to critically think and provide appropriate solutions. 
  7. Ability to work effectively and efficiently.

Environmental Conditions:

Incumbents work in indoor environments with moderate to loud noise levels. Duties may be completed in cold and hot temperatures, including work on slippery and/or uneven surfaces. Work environment includes working around students, school equipment, and office equipment. 

 

Work Schedules:

Must be available to report during the school year consistent with the district’s school year calendar.

 

Background Checks:

The individual selected for this position will be required to pass a criminal history background check.
