General Summary:

The GSRP assistant provides assistance to GSRP students in the classroom as well as to the GSRP classroom teacher.  He/she reports to the principal and teacher of the program.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assists GSRP students with all aspects of attending school.
  2. Works under the direction of the GSRP teacher to adapt lessons and materials to fit needs of students.
  3. Assists teacher with maintenance of classroom records for GSRP students (attendance, behavior documentation, anecdotal notes, lunch count) as requested by the teacher.
  4. Maintains confidentiality with regard to student and family records and information.
  5. Takes part in planning meetings as requested.
  6. Attends training or in-services.
  7. Accompanies GSRP students on field trips.
  8. Maintains positive public relations with children, parents, staff, administration and community members.
  9. Carries out recreational and educational activities as directed.
  10. Completes 24 hours of unpaid professional development each year.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  1. Must have one of the following: High school diploma or GED.
  2. Interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively and courteously with students and school personnel.
  3. Must complete 24.0 hours of professional development (PD) training per calendar year (Jan 1 through Dec 31).  First aid and CPR training can count for up to 2.0 hours of the PD hours.
  4. Previous experience working with children.
  5. Ability to care for, supervise, and nurture children.
  6. Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  7. Ability to follow directions and work independently.
  8. Ability to assist with maintaining records of student progress.
  9. Excellent organizational skills.
  10. Ability to resolve conflict.
  11. Dependable, reliable, and protective of sensitive/confidential information. 
  12. A tuberculosis (TB) test report showing evidence that staff member is free from communicable tuberculosis and is verified within one year before employment must be on file.

 

GSRP assistants hired for the sole purpose of covering for GSRP staff lunch breaks are not required to meet the educational requirements above.  However, the employee MUST be a high school graduate.
