General Summary:

The Indigenous Education (IE) Teacher Instructional Assistant (TIA) works with Native American and Alaskan Native students on academic and other needs.  The TIA student support is directed and supervised by the IE Coordinator with cooperation and input from classroom instructor and/or school administration.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Works with identified IE students individually, in small groups, and in the classroom to reinforce learning of basic and advanced skills to improve school success.
  2. Develops plans of appropriate activities for IE students to achieve the objectives directed by the classroom instructor.
  3. Assists the IE student’s classroom instructor in the preparation of strategies and materials to reinforce basic and more advanced skills for individual students.
  4. Assists classroom instructors with IE student behavior management as requested.  
  5. Alerts the classroom instructor and IE Coordinator of any issues about an IE student. 
  6. Participates in IE staff activities and developments at assigned building, department, and district levels as necessary.
  7. Works with IE students on computer to access and develop necessary academic skills as needed to supplement learning.
  8. Assists with testing as requested.
  9. Attends IE TIA and building staff, Individual Evaluation Plan (IEP) and Team Addressing Student Concerns (TASC) meetings as requested by the IE Coordinator.  If the classroom instructor requests meeting attendance, please receive IE Coordinator approval.   
  10. Maintains student reports, records, and make recommendations as requested by IE Coordinator.  Forward the documentation as scheduled.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge Skills and Abilities Required:

  1. Minimum education requirement is a high school diploma.  Previous college credit, WorkKeys certification or college degree preferred. 
  2. Interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively and courteously with students and school personnel.
  3. Previous experience working with children.
  4. Ability to care for, supervise, and nurture children.
  5. Ability to follow directions.
  6. Ability to work independently.
  7. Ability to assist with maintaining records of student progress.
  8. Excellent organizational skills.
  9. Ability to resolve conflict.
  10. Dependable, reliable, and protective of sensitive/confidential information. 
  11. Preference given to Native American and Alaskan Natives.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  1. Must be able to report on a regular and consistent basis. 
  2. Maintain consistent and punctual attendance.
  3. Duties include frequent walking and physical activity, as well as use of hands and arms for signaling and light lifting/carrying. Must have the ability to move about the classroom/building and school property, including bending, pushing/pulling, lifting, twisting, climbing, stooping, or crouching to complete work-related tasks with and without students. 
  4. The ability to listen and effectively orally communicate information and ideas to a diverse population.
  5. Ability to effectively discern information and formulate appropriate action(s).
  6. Ability to critically think and provide appropriate solutions. 
  7. Ability to work effectively and efficiently.

Environmental Conditions:

Incumbents work in indoor environments with moderate to loud noise levels. Duties may be completed in cold and hot temperatures, including work on slippery and/or uneven surfaces. Work environment includes working around students, school equipment, and office equipment. 

 

Work Schedules:

Must be available to report during the school year consistent with the district’s school year calendar.

The individual selected for this position will be required to pass a criminal history background check.
