The district is seeking interpreters and translators for a variety of languages, including but not limited to Spanish, Chinese, Polish, Russian, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Pashto, Burmese, French, Dari, Arabic, Hmong, Ukrainian, Persian. General Summary:

The Interpreter and Translator provides essential language support to facilitate effective communication between non-English-speaking students, parents, and school staff. This role ensures that language barriers do not hinder students' educational experience and that parents are fully informed and involved in their children's education.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Interpretation:
    • Provide accurate and confidential interpretation services for parent-teacher conferences, school meetings, and other school-related events.
    • Facilitate communication between non-English-speaking students and teachers during classroom activities and individual sessions.
    • Assist in translating important verbal instructions and school announcements during emergencies or significant events.
  2. Translation:
    • Translate written documents, including school policies, notices, forms, newsletters, and educational materials, into the required languages.
    • Ensure translations are culturally sensitive and maintain the original intent and accuracy of the documents.
    • Work with teachers and administrators to prepare translated materials for use in classrooms and school communications.
  3. Record Keeping and Reporting:
    • Maintain accurate records of interpretation and translation services provided, including timely submission of requested records to the district.
    • Report any issues or challenges encountered in the interpretation/translation process to school administration or the Executive Director of Student Achievement. 
    • Ensure compliance with confidentiality and privacy policies related to student and family information.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent; additional coursework or certification in interpretation/translation preferred.
  • Experience: Previous experience in a similar role, particularly in an educational setting, is highly desirable.
  • Skills:
    • Proficiency in other world languages and English, both written and spoken.
    • Strong understanding of cultural nuances and educational terminology.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
    • Organizational skills and attention to detail.

Working Conditions:

  • This position may require occasional evening or weekend hours for school events or meetings.
  • Ability to work in a diverse and dynamic school environment.
  • Regular use of computer and other office equipment (printer/copy machine, etc.
  • The ability to listen and effectively communicate, both written and orally, information and ideas to a diverse population.
  • Ability to drive to various locations throughout the district.

Background Checks:

The individual selected for this position will be required to pass a criminal history background check.
