General Summary
The school bus assistant is responsible for assisting the bus driver and students by providing safe and efficient transportation. The school bus assistant provides support and instruction to the students to ensure their understanding of the bus safety rules. A school bus assistant is accountable to the Transportation Director and/or his/her designee.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assists the bus driver to ensure safe transportation of all students.
- Assists the bus driver in maintaining cleanliness and safety of the bus.
- Assists students on and off the bus.
- Ensures that all students are properly secured in their seats.
- Is sensitive to individual student needs and conditions.
- Controls student behavior during the bus route.
- Acquires knowledge of all terms on student data forms used to describe handicapping conditions.
- Understands the handicapping condition of all students.
- Maintains individual behavior logs as directed by the Transportation Director, Dispatcher, and/or Transportation Managers.
- Prepares and submits Bus Conduct Reports as necessary.
- Informs the Transportation Director and/or Transportation Managers of any unusual incidents or circumstances.
- Maintains good rapport with students, parents/guardians.
- Administers first aid as necessary.
- Attends IEP meetings as requested.
- Is familiar with established emergency procedures.
- Reports defective equipment to the Fleet Manager on the appropriate form.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Meets state and federal standards for handling preschool students, as required.
- Clear understanding of the role and responsibilities of the special education bus assistant.
- Must be able to learn about and adapt to different disabilities and/or special needs such as autism, ED, LD, etc.
- Caring, patient attitude towards all students.
- Willingness to develop a basic understanding of the operation of adaptive equipment.
- Physical ability and skill necessary to restrain or assist with movement of students.
- Ability to react calmly in emergency situations.
- Complete required number of hours of instruction.
- Ability to handle confidential information.
- Meet state physical examination requirements.
- Uses respectable language at all times.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Must be able to report on a regular and consistent basis to the assigned worksite.
- Maintain consistent and punctual attendance.
- Duties include sitting, frequent walking and physical activity.
- The ability to move about the facility and/or vehicle/bus, including bending, pushing/pulling, lifting, twisting, climbing, stooping, or crouching to complete work-related tasks.
- Basic technology skills required to utilize computer and/or other office equipment (printer/copy machine, etc.) consistent with work-related tasks.
- The ability to provide effective supervision of students.
- The ability to listen and effectively communicate information and ideas to a diverse population.
- The ability to effectively discern information and formulate appropriate action(s).
- The ability to critically think and provide appropriate solutions.
- The ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- The ability to maintain effective time management.
- The ability to work effectively and efficiently in high stress or conflict situations.
- The ability to concentrate on multiple tasks with frequent interruptions.
Environmental Conditions:
Incumbents work in an indoor, school bus, and outdoor environment with moderate to loud noise levels. Work may be completed in controlled temperature conditions when indoors; however, duties may be completed in cold and hot temperatures. Incumbents work in outdoor environments with moderate to loud noise levels. Duties may include work on slippery and/or uneven surfaces. Work environment includes operating in and around moving vehicles.
Work Schedules:
Full-time work includes the ability to work a split shift on the days and hours provided by the bid/routing protocol and school year calendar.
Background Checks:
The individual selected for this position will be required to pass a criminal history background check, as well as random drug screening tests.
