Description

The 2024 Summer Explorers Club will run from 6/17/24 - 8/16/24, with Thursday, July 4, and Friday, July 5, off for the holiday. SEC Assistants must be available for training and set-up one week before the start of the program.  

 

SEC Assistants will work 35 to 40 hrs/week as scheduled. The Summer Explorers Club is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., M-F.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION - Summer Explorers Club (SEC) Program Assistant

Status - Sub/Temp

Schedule - up to 40 hours per week

General Summary:

Summer Explorers Club Assistants are directly responsible to the Summer Explorers Club Manager or designee for duties about the operation and camper safety of the Day Camp.  Campers will range in age from 3-years old to 12-years old. Assistants must be available for training before the official start date of camp.  

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Supervises assigned campers at all times.
  2. Assists with assuring a fulfilling camp experience for all children.  This includes developing activities such as art, games, and songs and initiating spontaneous activities in the event of inclement weather.
  3. Implements and prepares activities for the week as assigned by the Manager or designee.
  4. Implements and enforces safety standards and guidelines established for the camp.
  5. Carries out events of weekly themes/activities planned by the Summer Explorers Club Managers and District Child Care Coordinator.
  6. Provides input to the Manager and/or Child Care Coordinator regarding general observations and suggestions on camp activities.
  7. Maintains positive public relations for the camp and sets a positive example for the rest of the staff.
  8. Maintains appropriate discipline of campers throughout the summer.
  9. Reports all disciplinary and staff problems/concerns to the Manager or designee on time.
  10. Maintains confidentiality concerning student and family records and information.
  11. Informs the Camp Manager and/or Child Care Coordinator when supplies are needed or equipment needs repair.
  12. Promptly handles first aid problems and fills out appropriate accident reports promptly.
  13. Cleans up facility and playgrounds during and after hours of operation.
  14. Assists campers with preparations for field trips and daily activities.
  15. Sets up and cleans assigned activity rooms daily.
  16. Completes training as required by Traverse City Area Public Schools.
  17. Performs other tasks as assigned by the Manager or designee.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required: 

  1. High school graduate (18+ years of age) with a strong interest in education or related field.
  2. High initiative and ability to positively interact with parents, children, and other staff.
  3. Ability to provide a safe and stimulating environment for children.
  4. Willing to work out-of-doors in all types of summer weather.  
  5. Bending, twisting, and running is necessary for the performance of daily tasks.  
  6. Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. while walking short distances.
  7. Able to comprehend, process, and apply information, instructions and directives.
  8. Able to withstand activities in the water for up to one hour with children.
  9. Ability to speak, comprehend, write and read the English language.
  10. Possess current adult, infant/child CPR, and First Aid certification, or willing to attain.
  11. Provide a Tuberculosis Test Report showing evidence that staff member is free from communicable tuberculosis and is verified within 1 year before employment.
